Theatre Production 104 Skills Project

This project’s goal was for me to branch out from my normal concentration and work on something new. I choose to build a convertible bench that can fold from a chair to a table. This project helped me gain team work skills by working with others to sand and assemble the pieces of the project. Also, it taught me to pay attention to detail so that all the pieces were the same. Time management played a large role in this project as well to make sure that I was able to make and assemble all the pieces for the project in time. Finally, I gained more confidence in my carpentry skills, for example, the use of a router, use of a band saw, use of a jig saw, and use of epoxy.

The Process

  • Researched different templates and designs

  • Found a love seat that could be folded into sections

  • Had to adapt it to make it into a chair

  • Build Templates out of cardstock then out of 1/8 inch thick Masonite board

  • Traced out pieces onto sheets of plywood with the templates

  • Rough cut all pieces out with Jigsaw and Bandsaw.

2nd part of process

  • Used template to make a perfect piece

  • Routed other pieces to match perfect piece

  • Used 2 inch hole saw to cut holes

  • Sanded everything (With help from Longwood Life)

  • Assembled Pieces

  • Add a Semi-Gloss Polyurethane finish

  • Measure and cut 2 inch conduit pipe

  • Use epoxy to glue pipe to side supports

  • Start to Assemble chair

  • After assembly clamp chair together until epoxy is dry

Final Product

My Chair was put into the Bedford Art Gallery at Longwood University to highlight students work in the Theater Department.
