Porthouse Theatre

Porthouse Theatre is an outdoor theatre space based out of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. This theatre runs through Kent State University where staff and students work at this theatre. Porthouse abides by the guidelines of the University Resident Theatre Contract with Actors’ Equity Association.

Before Load in At Kent State

  • Packed equipment from theatres and storages

  • Fixed cables

  • Tested equipment 

  • Checked digital patching on board and amp racks

  • Check all computers and Imac

  • Test NDI video soft ware

  • Strike speakers down in theater space at Kent

  • Set up to load trucks in loading dock

  • Get a battery count and element count

Load into Porthouse

  • Took two 40 foot truck loads to get all the equipment to Porthouse from Kent.

  • First truck was all road cases, cable carts, bucket lift, filing cabinets and shelves

  • Second truck was all lights and speakers

  • Stored all lights and road cases in dressing rooms at theatre

Hanging Speakers and Running Cable

Hanging speakers

  • Hung 5 main speakers on grid

  • Hung 5 delays on catwalk with 3 second delay patched to them

  • One foldback speaker with orchestra feed patched to it

  • SFX speaker for sound effects

  • Sub was flown in the air and put in the middle of the grid

Running Cable

  • 1000ft of speakcon cable to speakers on grid and catwalk to dimmer room and amp rack

  • XLR for headset to the board connected by snakes

  • Network for video feeds (stage feed and Music Director feed)

  • Used scissor lift to get to the grid

  • Walked on I Beams to get across the grid and run cable for Speakcon

Speaker Plot

Used a Genie Lift to hang speakers and run power to them from the Amp rack in the Dimmer Room to the grid. To access the grid from the catwalk my team had to harness and connect to life lines that spanned the grid and walk on I-beams to reach the center.

  • 6 Xi-1082’s

  • 5 SX300

  • 1 EVID 6.2 Special Effects Speaker

  • 1 subwoofer

Front of House Booth

Boards

  • Venue SC48

    • Vocals, Qlab, God mic, page mic, Orchestra feed mains

  • Behringer X32

    • Orchestra feed from Furmar stage box backstage

    • Those feeds were sent to buses (keys, guitars, percussion, and bass)

    • Buses sent to Venue and into the mains

Amp racks

  • Main rack

    • Used Cobranet for digital patching 

  • Furmar stage box

    • Used Audia for digital patching

  • Each system had a high pass filter, gain, and delay patched to it

Responsibilities

  • Set up orchestra

  • Test all microphones and inputs

  • Run line check with the band

  • Turn on all equipment and amps 

  • Set up video feeds of stage and music director

  • Strike orchestra each night

  • Guitar (DI box and amp)

  • Bass (DI box and amp)

  • Electric piano (DI and amp)

  • Full drum kit (kick mic, snare mic, two overhead mics)

Responsibilities

  • Set up orchestra

  • Run all cable for guitars and test amps

  • Set up mics for amps and area mics for Ukulele

  • Turn on all equipment at Front of House booth

  • Run a line check with actors

  • Live Mix vocals for the run of the show

  • Strike equipment at the end of the run

  • 3 acoustic guitars (Amps with DI out and mics on amp)

  • 3 electric guitars (Amps with DI out and mics on amp)

  • Mandolin (amp with DI out)

  • Ukulele (area mic)

  • Bass (DI and powered speaker)

  • 2 electric pianos (DIs and Amps)

  • Full drum set (kick mic, snare mic, two overhead mics)
